Hengqin Culture & Art Complex: Architecture at the Crossroads of Nature and Urbanism
Zhuhai, China – Yunchao Xu/Atelier Apeiron
Atelier Apeiron’s Hengqin Culture & Art Complex in Zhuhai is a bold architectural response to a rapidly developing urban landscape. Situated at the heart of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the 142,560 m² complex is conceived as a cultural and civic landmark that anchors Hengqin Island’s growing identity.
Integrating Nine into One
The project unifies nine independent public functions—including a library, archives, performance venues, and activity centers—into a single cohesive structure. Atelier Apeiron’s competition-winning design addressed conflicting requirements by segmenting the complex into distinct yet connected volumes, fostering both independence and synergy.
Form and Structure
At the base of the complex, three large inverted catenary arches—crafted from wood and bamboo—serve as symbolic gateways to the Knowledge, Performance, and Exhibition Halls. The use of natural materials and porous design elements allows for transparency and a dialogue between indoor space and the surrounding parkland. Above the arches, modular units provide flexibility for evolving programmatic needs.
Responding to Climate and Context
Challenges such as typhoons and unstable soil were addressed through material innovation and structural resilience, including a sealed basement system and lightweight glass curtain walls. To bring daylight into large interior volumes, skylights and diffusers channel soft natural light deep into the building.
Landscape and Urban Interface
Inspired by natural forms—terraces, cliffs, and caves—the rooftop landscape unfolds over multiple levels, with gardens, play areas, and open-air platforms offering views and public space. The building forms a seamless transition between residential towers and the adjacent city park, while its catenary profile creates a striking silhouette from river to hill.
A Living Civic Machine
Rather than a monumental object, the Hengqin Culture & Art Complex operates as a “vertical city” for culture and community. Public life is layered across platforms and woven through multifunctional spaces, redefining what a civic building can be in the 21st century.
